With winter fast approaching and many of our homes starting to feel the cold, the fight to keep warm has already begun. I’ve found two top contenders that can help keep you warm this coming winter.

On the red team we have the classic, silent warmth of the VonHaus Closed Fin Oil Filled Radiator. On the blue team, the quick blasting heat of the Emperial Ceramic Fan Heater.

I tried and tested both units to see which one can truly keep a room warm, over time.

The Emperial delivers instant gratification, you simply flick the switch and within thirty seconds the hot ceramic coil is blasting heat directly at you. Perfect for a freezing cold office room that needs warmth instantly.

The VonHaus Radiator on the other hand provides a far superior quality of heat. While it take 10–15 minutes to heat up the oil, once it’s running it radiates a continuous heat that keeps the whole room warm for hours. The Emperial heats up instantly and targets a small area, creating hot and cold spots. The heat doesn’t stick around for long once its turned off, while the VonHaus gives you true ambient warmth.

The VonHaus Radiator immediately shines this round because it’s fundamentally silent. The heating element is entirely encased, meaning zero disruptive fan noise during calls or deep-focus work. We did note the occasional tick sound as the metal expands during warming-up and cooling down, even though it wasn’t all that disruptive. It’s certainly not the persistent noise of a fan blowing, for those who value silence the Vonhaus is a gift that keeps on giving.

The Emperial’s 2000W ceramic coil requires a powerful fan and that fan creates a constant, droning white noise. I found that after 20 minutes of use the fan noise became intrusive, killing concentration. For any professional environment involving video calls, phone calls or audio recording the fan noise is a huge put off.

The Emperial is ultimately designed for convenience: it’s lightweight, compact and highly portable. You can easily tuck it away after use, it’s also equipped with a digital thermostat and remote control for convenience.

The Emperial relies entirely on its fan and coil. The fan is a mechanical weak point that often fails first in affordable fan radiators. Once the fan turns off, the heat disappears quickly forcing the unit to cycle on again soon after. The long-term reliability and efficiency of the VonHaus are undisputed here.

The VonHaus Oil Radiator is the clear winner of this showdown and the Editor’s Choice. While the Emperial Fan Heater offers instant heat, the VonHaus is superior for daily use thanks to its silent operation and ability to retain heat for longer. Its mechanical safety features and passive warming capabilities make it the smarter, safer, and more efficient investment for keeping your home office warm this winter.

Which heater is cheaper to run?

Both are 2000W on max, meaning they cost the same to run at full power. However, the VonHaus costs less to run due to its ability to maintain warmth passively after it cycles off, unlike the Emperial which cools down immediately.

Does VonHaus offer a more powerful model for larger rooms?

Yes they do. If you need to tackle a genuinely large space you can upgrade to the VonHaus Digital Oil Filled Radiator. The upgraded version replaces the mechanical timer for a 24-hour digital one. You also gain the luxury of a remote control, digital temperature display and a power increase of (500W).

Is the VonHaus Radiator silent?

Yes, functionally so. Since there is no fan, the core operation is silent, making it ideal for deep focus work. As mentioned before there is an occasional ‘tick’ or expansion noise when the metal heats or cools, this is normal for oil radiators and quickly fades.

Is the Emperial suitable for an office?

Yes, it can be used in an office or any room but the heat isn’t long lasting. It dissipates quickly, only heats up a concentrated area and is more costly to run.
