Introduction: Philips Hue vs TP-Link Tapo
Smart lighting is brilliant. Walking into a room and having the lights turn on, or asking Alexa to “set movie mode,” is genuinely useful. But for years, getting started has meant paying a “tax.”
The market leader, Philips Hue, charges an eye-watering £50+ per colour bulb. On top of that, for the best experience, they want you to buy a separate “Bridge” (hub) for another £50. It’s a massive barrier to entry.
Meanwhile, challengers like TP-Link’s Tapo are flooding the market with bulbs that cost £7-£12, connect directly to your Wi-Fi without a hub and claim to do the exact same thing.
Is Philips Hue truly 5x better, or is it just a legacy brand resting on its laurels? I bought both to find out if the cheap option is finally good enough to surpass the leader.

Round 1: Setup & Convenience – The “Hub” Factor

This is where the Tapo shines immediately. I screwed the Tapo L530E into my lamp, opened the Tapo app and it connected to my Wi-Fi in less than a minute. No extra boxes, no messing around with ethernet cables, just simple plug & play.
The Philips Hue bulb can work via Bluetooth now, but it’s slow and limited. To get the “real” experience (out-of-home control, fast response), I had to plug the Hue Bridge into my router and set up a Zigbee network. It’s rock-solid and reliable once done, but it’s a hassle and an extra cost that the Tapo completely avoids.
Round 2: Colour Quality & Brightness – The “Eye Test”
This is where the huge price difference starts to show.
The Philips Hue bulb is stunning. The colours are rich, deep and accurate. When you ask for “warm white,” it looks like a high-end incandescent bulb. When you ask for purple, it is a deep, moody indigo. It also dims incredibly low without flickering, perfect for a nightlight.
The Tapo L530E is… good. Surprisingly good actually. The colours are vibrant and punchy. However, its greens and cyans struggle a bit compared to the Hue and it doesn’t get as bright (806 lumens vs Hue’s 1100). It also doesn’t dim as smoothly and at 1% it’s still that bit bright.
Round 3: The Ecosystem – Living with Them
If you want to deck out your entire house with 50 bulbs, light-strips and motion sensors then Philips Hue quality is unbeatable. The Zigbee mesh network means the bulbs talk to each other, so your Wi-Fi doesn’t get clogged up and slow. The accessories (dimmer switches, motion sensors) are premium and instant.
But if you just want smart lights in your living room and bedroom? Tapo is a fantastic starting point. The app is arguably more user-friendly than Hue’s. It has great scheduling option’s like, “Away Mode” to deter burglars and even energy monitoring (which Hue lacks). I found the voice control with Alexa to be just as fast as the Hue.

TRUK Scorecard

The Philips Hue is technically the superior light bulb, but the Tapo L530E delivers 90% of the performance for a fraction of the price, making it the ultimate logical choice.
TRUK Final Verdict
The Philips Hue lost this battle simply because the barrier to entry is too expensive; buying a hub and single bulbs at £50 is overkill for most of us.
If you are planning a whole-home renovation with 30+ lights and need absolute colour perfection! Phillips Hue is the professional gold standard.
For the rest of us, buy the Tapo. It wins because it solves the “smart light” problem instantly and affordably. You can kit out an entire home with Tapo for the price of one Hue bulb and hub. The Tapo app is also brilliant and works straight out the box.
Tapo is the new “People’s Champ” of smart lighting.

FAQs
Do I need a hub for the Tapo bulb?
No. That is its biggest advantage. It connects directly to your existing Wi-Fi router. You just screw it in, open the app and you’re done.
Will Tapo bulbs slow down my Wi-Fi?
If you have 50 of them, maybe. Wi-Fi routers can struggle with too many devices. But for 5-10 bulbs in key rooms, you won’t notice any difference at all. If you plan to have 30+ bulbs, that’s when the Hue’s separate “Zigbee” hub becomes worth the money.
Does Tapo still work with Alexa/Google?
Yes, seamlessly. I tested it with an Echo Dot and it responded instantly to “Alexa, turn the lights blue” and “Alexa, dim the lights to 50%.”
Can I buy either brand in multipacks?
Yes, and that’s where the price difference becomes even more insane. Tapo often sells 2-packs and 4-packs, bringing the cost per bulb even lower. Philips Hue also offers multipacks, but a 2-pack of their colour bulbs still often costs more than a 4-pack (or more) of the Tapo bulbs.
TP-Link Tapo L530E Smart Bulb
A hub-free smart Wi-Fi bulb that offers 16 million colours, voice control, and energy monitoring for well under £10.
